Anti-gay marriage law in national interest -Ndoma-Egba

The Senate Majority Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), on Tuesday in Abuja stated that the passage of Same sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2013 by the National Assembly was in national interest.
According to him, while about 16 out of the 193 countries in the world have allowed same-sex marriages, some countries including Nigeria and Uganda have rejected it.
The former chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, represented by his Special Assistant (Legal Matters), Mr. Ignatius Itcha, offered the explanation in his paper entitled ‘The Relevance of the 2013 Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, in Relation to Nigeria’s Penal Code Provision on Sodomy’.
It was delivered during a national theology seminar on same-sex union with the theme ‘Union of persons with Same Sex Inclination: A Call for an African Christian Conversation’.
The event was jointly organised by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria and Metropolitan Archdiocese of Jos.
The coordinator of the seminar, Rev. Fr. Evworo Osa, frowned on the recommendation of capital punishment for persons who indulged in same sex by some religious faith.
Ndoma-Egba said, “Most jurisdictions criminalize sodomy let alone same sex marriage. However, the issue of same sex marriage has elicited much discourse and concern in recent past. Polls in various countries show that there is rising support for legally recognizing same sex marriage across race, ethnicity, age religion, political affiliation and socio-economic status.
“The Same sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act is relevant because Nigeria is already battling with so many social vices-teenage pregnancies, child abandonment child prostitution, human trafficking, corruption, kidnapping, insurgency and other forms of criminal activities which all started as insignificant criminal activity but has today become monsters threatening our very existence.”
