May 22, 2014
The
Assistant Director, Fisheries, Kaduna State Agricultural Development
Project, Dr Abel Williams, on Thursday called for greater investment in
livestock production so as to tap its full economic potentials.
Williams made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna.
He noted that government investment in agriculture was skewed to crop cultivation, saying that the budgetary provisions to livestock development had remained negligble.
The official also called for the development of a clear policy on livestock development in the country, to attract more investment and expand production.
“Government had forgotten the fact that livestock is the economic backbone of the north.
“Hardly do you hear subsidy on cattle feeds or concentrate in the market.”
The assistant director also spoke on the rising cases of cattle rustling in the country, saying government must take proactive measures by identifying the causes and stopping the ugly trend.
He called for the involvement of communities, the traditional institution and security personnel in addressing the issue.
According to him, as a result of cattle rustling, meat has become expensive in the market when compared to before the incident became rampant.
William urged the Kaduna State Government to rehabilitate abattoirs across the state, saying that “hardly can you find any abattoir working to five per cent capacity.”
He also attributed most of illnesses in the society to the consumption of products from unhygienic abattoirs.
The official advised the state government to employ more veterinary doctors to take care of the growing livestock population and protect people from consuming unwholesome meat.
