Police arraign man for stealing wife’s N500, 000

A trader, Taiwo Rufus, was during the week arraigned before an Oshodi Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing his wife’s N500, 000.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that Rufus, 54, who resides at No. 4, Oremeji Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, committed the offence on May 20 at his residence.
He said the accused stole N500, 000 belonging to his wife, Mrs. Esther Rufus.
“The accused stole the money his wife kept inside her wardrobe and disappeared to an unknown destination,” he said.
Olatunde said when the complainant discovered that her money was missing, she called her husband on the telephone, but he refused to pick her calls.
“The accused also refused to come home and all efforts the complainant made to retrieve her money failed,” he said.
The prosecutor said the accused was arrested 10 days after his disappearance.
He said the offence contravenes Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for the offence.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr. Akeem Fashola, adjourned the case till June 26.
