The
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, has
said that the opposition political parties in the country owe their
existence to President Goodluck Jonathan.
“We created the political opposition
movement. The opposition movements owe their existence and activities to
President Goodluck Jonathan,” Anyim said on Tuesday night at the
presidential dinner organised by the alumni association of the
University of Port Harcourt.
The SGF represented the President at the event, which held at the International Conference Centre.
Jonathan, who was a member of the 1981
pioneer class of UNIPORT, shelved attendance at the dinner organised in
his honour by his former school mates at the eleventh hour as a result
of the bombings in Kano and Yobe states by Boko Haram.
Anyim said Jonathan had vowed to deliver
the fundamentals of democracy in Nigeria and that the President never
wished to remain perpetually in power but to expand the political
atmosphere for wider participation.
He said, “Unlike what many people
thought, you know when the opposition try to make so much noise, one
thing we know is that you cannot win election in Nigeria through
propaganda.
“We are enjoying what is happening. We
created it. The enhanced political environment is what the opposition is
enjoying. If they abuse it, do not mind. It does not matter. It does
not challenge us.
“Since the beginning of democracy in
1999, I have played active roles. I have encountered three Presidents.
My tenure as Senate President was greeted by the struggle to guarantee
the independence of democracy. Under Jonathan, I played a role in the
democratisation process of our polity, which is actually the content
that democracy brings to what one asks for.
“If you do not have the freedom to speak, the basic idea of achieving the fundamentals will be lacking.”
Also at the event, the Minister of
Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, said that the present administration had
provided unfettered access to education and raised the quality
tremendously.
He said that about 130 functional
Almajiri schools, 12 new universities and new polytechnics had been
created in the past four years.
