The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has continued the interrogation of former Adamawa State Governor, Adm. Murtala Nyako(retd.).

Nyako, who was impeached last year by the state House of assembly, surrendered himself to the ‎commission on Monday and was grilled by operatives for eight hours and thirty minutes.

The ex-governor, who arrived the EFCC headquarters on Monday by 10am, was asked to go after a grueling process ‎of interrogation that was suspended by 6.30pm.

However, the commission resumed the interrogation today with Nyako’s arrival at the EFCC at 10am.

Investigation revealed that operatives are still interrogating him almost ‎three hours after his arrival at the EFCC on Tuesday.

The Head‎ of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, told our correspondent on the telephone that the former governor is a guest of the EFCC today.

He said, “I can confirm that Nyako is at the commission.”

Wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari, on Monday paid a surprise visit to Jos to condole with the Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Almakura, and his wife over the death of the governor’s mother-in-law, Hajia Aisha Musa.

Hajia Musa passed on in the early hours of Monday at the age of 85 in her residence in Jos.

She has since been buried according to the Islamic rites.

 

The President’s wife, who came in company with Senators Ahmed Lawan,  Abdullahi Adamu and Solomon Ewuga, among others, drove straight to the house of the deceased in the centre of the town, where he stayed for a brief moment.

While condoling with the Al-Makura’s family, Mrs. Buhari urged them to take solace in the fact that Hajia Musa lived a life worthy of emulation.
On behalf of herself and her family, the first lady prayed that God would comfort the Al-Makuras.

The Senator prayed God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss, adding that they came to share with the Al-Makura’s family in their hour of grief.

He added, “God knows why she has to go at this time. We pray that her soul will rest in peace.”

Al-Makura thanked them for sympathising with the family, saying the visit had overwhelmed his family.

“Thank you for sympathising with the family at our trial moment, only God will reward you,” he added.

He described the death of the mother-in-law as a loss to the family, praying that God should accept the spirit of the deceased. 

The deceased’s daughter, Aisha Dahiru Ibrahim, described her mother as a generous, loving and accommodating person, who preached peace among her children and other people.

Niger Delta activist and spokesperson for the Ijaw Republican Assembly, Ms. Annkio Briggs, has criticised the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to discontinue the ongoing Niger Delta Amnesty Programme.

The amnesty programme was instituted on August 6, 2009 by the administration of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua to tackle the growing militancy in the region, including destruction of oil pipelines, illegal bunkering, kidnapping and illegal refineries.

But Buhari had said in his inaugural speech on Friday that the amnesty programme in the Niger Delta would end in December, 2015.

He added, “But the government intends to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place. I call on the leadership and people in these areas to cooperate with the state and federal governments in the rehabilitation programmes, which will be streamlined and made more effective.

“As ever, I am ready to listen to grievances of my fellow Nigerians. I extend my hand of fellowship to them so that we can bring peace and build prosperity for our people.”

In an interview with The PUNCH, Briggs expressed disappointment with the decision. She said though Buhari, as President, did not need anyone’s permission to do what he thought was right for the Niger Delta, it did not make such a decision justifiable.

Briggs added, “I always say we should not forget the reason why we have the amnesty programme today in Nigeria. People should not forget that the programme is not to address the issue of the Niger Delta. It was set up to address the reaction to what is wrong with the Niger Delta, which was agitation.

“The major beneficiary of amnesty is the Federal Government of Nigeria because the acceptance of amnesty increased the output of fuel (oil). Secondly, the amnesty programme is meant to cover about 30,000 people.

“I would think that any incoming government would want to find out if the amnesty ends with the number of people that we are supposed to be catering for and address whatever issues that would arise from that investigation to find out what is on the ground for the programme.”

 The All Progressives Congress has given assurances that it would provide a level playing field for legislators to choose their leaders.

National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said this in an interview with reporters, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

Odigie-Oyegun spoke shortly after he led members of the National Working Committee of the APC to a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at Defence House.

He was responding to a question on whether the APC, which enjoys a majority in the National Assembly, can afford a crisis over the choice of its leaders.

The chairman said, “There will be no crisis. I want to give you that assurance, we are very conscious of the fact that the national assembly is a separate arm of government and the law provides, the constitution provides that they are the ones responsible for electing their own officers all we are going to do is provide for them a conducive environment.”

Odigie-Oyegun also said, President Buhari was putting together his ministerial list in consultation with the party. He noted that the President is a loyal party man who was always carrying the party along in his decisions.

He said, “All I can say is this, Mr. President is committed to carrying the party along in everything that he does and we are very grateful for that, and he has always been like that.

“He has put the party in the front burner in his consideration at all times.”

Earlier, the party chairman who was accompanied by his colleagues said they were at Defence House to pay their respects to the President.

He explained that they have not been able to do so before now because they were waiting for the inauguration.

Odigie-Oyegun also said the visit provided them the opportunity to pledge their support and loyalty to him as he sets about the task of rebuilding the nation.

According to him, all of those at the meeting agreed that the expectations of Nigerians are extremely high but that with the support of the party and members of the public the President will perform.

He described the discussions held between the party chiefs and the President as very frank noting that the President reiterated his commitment to ensure the safety of the lives and property of Nigerians.

On the President’s pronouncement of moving the military command and control centre to Borno State, Odigie-Oyegun said, “That is the case, he is giving it priority, there is nothing like life, he was elected to protect Nigerian lives and that is what he is giving first priority to.”
